England’s Euro 2024 Qualification Preview
The draw for Euro 2024 qualifying was made back in October 2022, and for the first time 🐻in a while, England might have 🌠to seriously work for their place at a major tournament.
Their qualifying campaign begins in March 2023, with a pair of tricky fixtures agaiඣnst Italy (in Naples) and Ukraine. England’s sಞummer fixtures are much kinder as they visit Malta and host North Macedonia before their campaign rounds off in the winter with the four reverse fixtures.
𓃲 It’s poised to be an exciting campaign for the Three Lions in the wake of a positive World Cup.🎶 Southgate is still at the helm, and there seems to be a determination in this squad to excel at the very highest level.
📖 This group will be tricky, but these young lions will relish and rise to the challenge.
Euro 2024 – Outright Odds
England at the 2022 World Cup
🌞 England entered the winter World Cup with rather muted expectations. Their 2022 Nations League campaign was nothing short of disastrous, but their final fixture before the tournament in Qatar, a 3-3 draw🐲 with Germany, gave some supporters optimism.
Their campaign began on an innocuous Monday afternoon against a stubborn Iran side who had a little more to think about than their World Cup opener given the political situation back home. Still, England blew away Carlos Queiroz’s side as Jude Bellingham starred and Bukayo Saka notched a brace🎐 in a 6-2 triumph.
The highly anticipated football vs soccer bout arrived on Matchday 2, but the contest with the USA was drab. The Americans stifled Gareth Southgate’s side and w💧ere arguably the stronger outfit in a forgettable stalemate.
Nevertheless, England’s points, combined with Iran’s victory over Wales, meant they had all but progressed into the round of 16. Matchday 3 proved to be a procession against the Welsh as the Three Lions scored three times in the s🦋econd half to eliminate their disappointing neighbou🍬rs.
With Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford now both joining the party, the excitement was increasing back home as Senegal awaꦉited in the first knockout round. While a physical and athletic outfit, the AFCON champions were no match for the Euro 2020 finalists as England scored twice at the end of the first half to put the t🧔ie beyond any reasonable doubt.
The exceptional Bellingham was instrumental in Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane’s goals before Foden and Saka combined at the start of the second period to triple Englaꦐnd’s lead. Simply put, it was a cakewalk.
Before the tournament started, many foreshadowed England’s route to glory including a tasty quarter-final match-up against the holders France. Didier Deschamps’ side were arguably the toughest Southgate had faced at a major tourname🌟nt, but this fearless English outfit were more than capable of sending L♛es Bleus home.
Unfortunately, the contest was a recipe for heartbreak from the get-go as England produced a spirited performance after going behind early. They were the better🃏 team for much of the tie and deservedly drew level through a Kane penalty, but the ruthless French re-established their lead out of nothing with 12 minutes remaining.
Theo Hernandez offered England a lifeline by barging into Mason Mount in the penalty area. A spot-kick was awarded following VAR intervention, and one of the game’s great penalty-takers ste🍎pped up with a few minutes remaining to equalise for a second time. Score, and the Three Lions would have all the momentum heading into the closing stages. A World Cup semi-final against Morocco awaited them, but Kane’s effort was wild.
That was England’s last chance.

Predictions for England’s Euro 2024 Qualifying Campaign
Qualifying campaigns have been a procession for England since 2008, with contests against European 𒁃minnows dominating their schedule. Malta are the lowest-ranked side in England’s Euro 2024 qualifying group and will be expected to finish bottom in the standings, but the rest of England’s opponents all qualified for Euro 2020.
Admittedly, North Macedonia ar👍e no𓆏t quite as strong as they were a couple of years ago, but they won’t be a walkover on home soil, that’s for sure.
Ukraine are a legitimately sound side with bags of taleℱnt across the pitch. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mykahylo Mudryk, and Ilya Zabarnyi make 🎀up an impressive core.
And then there’s Italy. The greatest paradox in world football: European champions and World Cup absentees. Their mission during this qualifying campaign will be to avenge North Macedonia’s stunning play-off victory which prevented them from making the trip out to Qatar this winter. The Azzurri are obviously England’s greatest challenge in this group, and Roberto Mancini will welcome Federico Chiesaꦚ back to the fold in 2023 after he returned from injury following a lengthy absence before the World Cup.
Despite Italy’s knowhow and Ukraine’s talent, we are backing England progressing into Euro 2024 as group winners. The top two will advance to the finals, and the Azzurri should advance with the Three Lions. Nevertheless, don’t 🎶be surprised if either Ukraine or North Macedonia take points off one of the big boys.

England European Championship History
England’s relationship with the Europea🐻n Championship took some time to blossom. They competed in just one of the first five iterations of the competition, finishing third in 1968 with Sir Alf Ramsey at the helm. The Three Lions failed to qualify in 1960, 1964, 1972,ꦜ 1976, and 1984.
They became regulars in the competition from Euro ’88, but the tournament in Germany was a miserable one for Bobby Robson’s side. The behaviour of English supporters dominated the headlines as the Three Lions exited the competition in the group stage, havin🏅g lost all three of their games.
They didn’t fare much better four year🐠s later despite their heroic effort at Italia ’90. England were once again dumped out in the first round following another winless group stage.
The opportunity to host the tournament in 1996 triggered an upsurge in optimism and momentum up and down the country, to which Terry Venables’ talented squad responded. An entire nation roared as England final🅠ly enjoyed success at the Euros, this time on home soil. They thumped the Netherlands 4-1 to progress into the knockouts, where they beat Sp꧅ain on penalties before facing Germany for a chance to play in the final against the Czech Republic.
Alan Shearer thrus🌊t a sold out Wembley Stadium into a state of delirium when he scored the opener just three minutes in, but Stefan Kuntz quickly equalised. A tight contest ensued with England coming within a longer Pauꦍl Gascoigne stud of victory. To penalties the two sides went and, once again, the Germans were perfect. The opening 11 spot kicks were successful before Gareth Southgate’s tame effort was denied by Andreas Kopke.
An Oliver Bierhoff golden goal lat💫er and Germany were European champions for the third time.
For England, a Golden Generation of talent awaited. Surely, this was just the beginning of a pros🥀perous new era?
Well…
The Three Lions were plagued by failure in the tournaments that followed. After an early exit at Euro 2000, expectations were sky-high for their campaign in Portugal at Euro 2004. Wayne Rooney had announced himself to t⛎he world, but they exited the competition in the quarter-finals following more shootout heartbreak.
Steve McLaren’s infamous umbrella antics will always be remembered in the build-up to Euro 20🎃08 as England failed to qualify for the tournament after being beaten by Croatia at Wembley. They retur♈ned in 2012, but Roy Hodgson’s side were beaten by Italy on penalties in the last eight. The Three Lions were light years off Europe’s best, and this came to a head in 2016 as they suffered one of their all-time great humiliations at the hands of Iceland, who beat them 2-1 in the round of 16.
Euro 2016 was the lowest of the low for England. 🌄Hodgson left his post, and following Sam Allardyce’s brief stint, a beacon of hope arrived. Southga🦩te was back, and he’s since led the Three Lions to two of their most impressive runs at major tournaments. Hope was reignited at the 2018 World Cup, but it was at Euro 2020 (delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic) when a nation truly believed football was coming home.
Southgate’s lions purred on their way to the final as Germany were beaten in the round of 16: an historic triumph. Only Italy stood between them and glory, but we all know how an English fairtyale ends, right? With a heartbre💦aking loss on penalties.
Will England Win Euro 2024?
That’s some question. Euro 2024 is still many months away at th♈e time of writing, so plenty can change between now and then. However, we can expect Gareth Southgate’s side to look pretty similar in Germany to how they did in Qatar. It’s hard to envisage too many changes to the squad.
England are certainly blessed with the talent to go all the way, but they need to get over the hump with this group of players. The manner of their 2022 World Cup exit will undoubtedly motivate the Three Lions, but the competition at Euro 2024 will be incredibly tough. France’s ruthlessness is simply frightening, while the hosts are the current bookie’s 𒐪favourite despite a disappointing World Cup. Spain and Italy remain European behemoths, while an incredibly gifted Portuguese squad will be buoyed by✱ a new manager following Fernando Santos’ departure.
Nevertheless, Euro 2024 might be when this England sq🍨uad peaks. They have a great shot of goin🎉g all the way, but we could say the same thing about several sides.

ThePuntersPage Final Say
Exciting times lie ahead for England with Euro 2024 already just 18 month🔯s away. Qualifying in 2023 will be no easy task, however.
